Exemplary Practices in Academic Advising

Frequency of Consultation

The University Faculty Senate legislation calls for "Workable guidelines concerning the ratio of advisees to adviser and the frequency with which they should consult."

Ideal Practice

Academic advisers must be readily available to students for consultation.

Exemplary Practice

Several units in the College of Health and Human Development at Penn State have, in addition to assigned faculty mentors with whom students may regularly consult, "frontline" professional advisers who are readily available to students for routine and procedural questions.
